Beijing, also known as Peking, is a metropolis in
Northern China, and the capital of the People's Republic of
China. Governed as a municipality under direct administration of the central government, Beijing borders Hebei Province to the north west, south, and for a small section in the east, and Tianjin Municipality to the southeast. Beijing is one of the Seven Great Ancient Capitals of China. Beijing is divided into 14 urban and suburban districts and two rural counties. Beijing is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city. It is also the destination of many international flights arriving in China.
Shanghai is one of the most populous city in China. The city is located in eastern China, at the middle portion of the Chinese coast and sits at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Due to its rapid growth in the last two decades, it has again become one of the world's leading cities, exerting influence over finance, commerce, fashion, and culture. Once a fishing and textile town, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to its favourable port location and was one of the cities opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanjing.
Shenzhen is a major city in the south of Southern China's Guangdong Province,situated immediately north of Hong Kong. Owing to China's economic liberalization, the area became China's first-and arguably one of the most successful-Special Economic Zones. It currently also holds sub-provincial administrative status, with powers slightly less than a province. Shenzhen's novel and modern cityscape is the result of the vibrant economy made possible by iberal economic policies and rapid foreign nvestment since the introduction of the policy of "reform and opening"and the establishment of the Special Economic Zone in the late 1970s.
Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province and the most populous city in Central China, with a population of over 11 million.
Wuhan is considered the political, economic, financial, commercial, cultural, and educational center of Central China. It is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and expressways passing through the city and connecting to other major cities.
Wuhan consists of three national development zones, four scientific and technological development parks, over 350 research institutes, 1,656 high tech enterprises, numerous enterprise incubators and investments from 230 Fortune Global 500 firms. It produced GDP of US$22.4 billion in 2018.
Hangzhou is the capital and most populous city of Zhejiang, which separates Shanghai and Ningbo.

Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi Province, and sub-provincial city in the People's Republic of China. One of the oldest cities in China, with more than 3, 100 years of history, the city was known as Chang'an before the Ming Dynasty. Xi'an is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, having held that position under several of the most important dynasties in Chinese history, including Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, and Tang. Xi'an is the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and home to the Terracotta Army. Since the 1990s, as part of the economic revival of inland China, especially for the central and northwest regions, the city of Xi'an has re-emerged as an important cultural.
Dalian is a major sub-provincial port city in Liaoning province, People's Republic of China,and is Liaoning's second largest city (after the provincial capital Shenyang) and the fourth most populous city of Northeast China.
The city has had a continuous annual double-digit percentage increase in GDP since 1992. In 2014, the city's GDP registered a 5.8% increase, reaching RMB 765.56 billion, while per capita GDP hit RMB 109,939. According to a nationwide appraisal by the National Bureau of Statistics, Dalian ranks eighth among Chinese cities in terms of overall strength.
Nanjing is the capital city of Jiangsu with a population of 4.5 million. Owing to its superior geographic location, the city has remained the transportation center of the Yangzi Delta region. Chengdu is a sub-provincial city which serves as the capital of the Chinese province of Sichuan. It is one of the three most-populous cities in Western China, the other two being Chongqing and Xi'an. As of 2014, the administrative area housed 14,427,500 inhabitants, the largest in Sichuan, with an urban population of 10,152,632. In 2020, Chengdu ranked 43rd in the Global Financial Centres Index.
Chengdu is in central Sichuan. The surrounding Chengdu Plain is known as the "Country of Heaven" and the "Land of Abundance". Its prehistoric settlers included the Sanxingdui culture. The site of Dujiangyan, an ancient irrigation system, is designated as a World Heritage Site. The Jin River flows through the city.
